How the 48-Team Tournament Format Works

The 2026 men’s international soccer tournament is the largest ever staged. With 48 teams, 12 groups, and 104 matches spread across 39 days and three countries, even seasoned fans have questions. Here’s a clear breakdown.

The group stage

The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four teams (Groups A through L). In each group, every team plays the other three teams once — six matches per group, 72 matches total.

After all three matchdays in a group, teams are ranked by:

1. Points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss)
2. Goal difference
3. Goals scored
4. Head-to-head record

The top two teams from each group advance automatically to the Round of 32 — that’s 24 teams.

The third-place spots

Here’s where 2026 differs from previous tournaments. The eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also advance. This creates 32 teams in total for the knockout stage — hence “Round of 32.”

Which third-placed teams advance? The eight with the best records (most points, then goal difference, then goals scored) across Groups A–L.

The knockout rounds

From 32 teams, the tournament runs a traditional single-elimination bracket:

The host countries and cities

Matches are played across 16 cities in three countries:

• United States (11 cities): New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Miami, Atlanta, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Houston
• Mexico (3 cities): Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey
• Canada (2 cities): Toronto, Vancouver
