How to Host a Soccer Watch Party — The Complete Guide

A great watch party isn’t complicated — it’s just prepared. Here’s the full playbook.

1. Choose your matches early

With 104 matches across 39 days, you don’t need to host every game. Pick the ones that matter to your group:

• Your team’s group-stage matches (three guaranteed games)
• A big fixture (the opener, a rivalry match, or the final)
• The knockout rounds if your team advances

Check the match schedule tool for kickoff times in your timezone — this is the single biggest source of confusion. A 20:00 kickoff in Dallas is 6:00 PM ET and 3:00 PM PT. Make sure everyone knows when to show up.

2. Sort the screens

The tournament runs for 39 days — some group-stage days have three or four matches. If you’re hosting multiple games, you’ll want:

• At least one large TV (65”+ is ideal for a group)
• A streaming subscription or a broadcast channel with rights in your country
• Audio sorted before guests arrive — nothing kills atmosphere like fiddling with sound at kickoff

Test everything the day before, not five minutes before kickoff.

3. Run a sweepstake

This is the single highest-impact thing you can do for a group party. Here’s how:

1. Write all 48 team names on slips of paper.
2. Everyone draws one (or two, depending on group size).
3. The person whose team wins the tournament wins the pot.
4. Charge a small entry fee (£5/$5/€5) and pool it.

4. Set up a prediction card round

Before each match (especially knockouts), hand out prediction cards:

6. Food and drinks

Keep it simple and themed. You don’t need a full kitchen operation:

For small groups (under 10): shared platters work best. Think nachos, sliders, wings — things that don’t require plates or cutlery.

For larger gatherings: a slow-cooker chilli or a curry that’s ready when kick-off happens. Hot, hearty, and no one has to miss the game to cook.

7. Print the bracket

Put a tournament bracket on the wall where everyone can see it. Update it as results come in. Arguments about who’s going to win are 80% of the entertainment.

8. Manage timing expectations

Group-stage matches sometimes overlap — if you have three TVs, great. If you have one, pick the game most relevant to your group and have the other on a laptop.
