With 48 teams in the tournament, there’s a side for everyone — even if you’ve never watched soccer in your life. Here’s how to find your team.
Pick based on heritage
The simplest approach: which countries are in your family tree? Even a great-grandparent’s origin story becomes a legitimate reason to follow a team. Search your surname, your hometown, or your favourite cuisine and work backwards to a country.
Pick based on host-country pride
The three host countries — the United States, Mexico, and Canada — are all in the tournament. This is North America’s moment. If you live in any of the 16 host cities, your local stadium is hosting real matches.
- The USA hasn’t won the tournament, but playing on home soil changes the dynamic entirely. Expect atmosphere.
- Mexico is deeply passionate about the game and will have extraordinary support at its home venues.
- Canada is still building its soccer identity — a genuine underdog story to follow.
Pick based on playing style
Not all soccer is the same. Teams have personalities:
| Style | Countries worth watching |
|---|---|
| Attack-first, high-energy | Brazil, Portugal, France, Netherlands |
| Tactical and organised | Germany, Italy, Spain, Croatia |
| Passionate underdogs | Senegal, Morocco, Japan, Ecuador |
| Physical and direct | Argentina, England, Uruguay |
Pick the dark horse
Every tournament has a team that over-achieves. Past examples include Morocco reaching the semi-finals, South Korea upsetting Germany, and Japan topping a group with Spain and Germany.
For 2026, some candidates: Japan, Senegal, Morocco, Ecuador — all with genuine quality and motivated by proving they belong at the top level.
Pick the defending champion
Argentina won the 2022 tournament and arrived at 2026 as the current holder. They’re also one of the world’s most entertaining teams when they’re on form. Easy pick if you want to follow a proven contender.
Run a sweepstake instead
Can’t decide? Run a sweepstake and let fate decide. Our Host Kit includes draw slips for all 48 teams — everyone pulls a name from a hat and has a team for the whole tournament. Suddenly everyone has someone to cheer for.
One rule: stick with them
The single mistake casual fans make is switching allegiances mid-tournament. Pick a team before the group stage and ride it through. The frustration, the drama, and the celebration all require consistency. One team, 39 days, let’s go.
